Hello Sarah. Your article is interestingbecause I have seen instances of so-called performance art. It's creators need some way to distinguish in from stage drama, so they call it a ritual. It is therefore a particular kind of religion, one that does perform types of human sacrifice. We can call it this because it often does something to do the human body, usually something that will shock viewers. I have heard about a man who put several of his bodily fluids into shot glasses then consumed them in front of an audience. There are even worse examples. One German man would cut off parts of his own body as a performance for an audience. Thankfully he was arrested and imprisoned. These performers are just insane, but why does the audience want to watch them?
