When a tropical storm hits your area, heavy rain descending like condemnation from above, and roads start to flood, one gets a glimpse of what life was like when everything was more local.
Funny, I've been thinking about this in recent weeks and under that condemning bluster from mother nature. I quite enjoyed not having power for 16hrs, enjoyed the in-house camping while it lasted.
I live in Nelon County VA in 1969 Hurricane Camille stales over these mountains and dumped around 23 inches of rain in 6 hours. I have met locals who lost members of their family and the bodies were never found. Community came together. The bond was Faith! I have a farm and purchase many items from the Mennonite family businesses. When I go to the area between Dayton and Bridgewater VA in the heart of the Mennonite farms I am in awe of the orderliness industrialism and JOY. There is only one answer God and Family.
I've known the need for years now that I need to watch less politics on YouTube, read less politics, and talk less politics with friends. Thank you for reminding me that I should engage more with family, friends, and community.
"We only have so much time to give, only so much attention, and so much emotional energy. Therefore, we must be selective about what we dedicate ourselves to." Isn't that the truth.
If you happen to live in a reasonable place where you can get to know your neighbors, that is what you should do, however some (me) live in a place where that is the last thing one should do, not all towns are the same, break-ins happen here regularly, confrontations with criminals are regular, and though the usual recommendation is to get the hell out, (which is true, I should) jobs, and other personal things can keep one in hostile territory. I live in hostile territory, and the adrenaline is 24/7. Just today, trespassers, and break-ins occurred on this property... it will likely be happening again tonight. It is certainly because there is no community ...as in... I don't live in one that is life's problem... for everyone else, be very grateful if you can actually go for a walk down the street... or call the police and have them come. One day, when I leave this place it will be like a veteran coming home from a war. I almost died last year (attacked by illegal alien) and this kind of thing isn't going to end here any time soon... the crisis is right outside my door 24/7... One day I hope to live in a place where I forget I even own a gun....
Gilmore Girls was a TV show about a single mother and her family. One thing that was in the show were regular town meetings with the mayor. The townspeople knew each other and mostly agreed on how they wanted things done. When were towns run that way in the real world of the USA? It wasn't happening when I was a baby a zillion years ago.
We're choosing our tribes on the internet now. One issue tribes do work if there are enough agreeing on the actions to take. Such tribes can get things done at a national level.
The guru's of eastern religion and several ancient saints (plus the gnostics) teach that when one reaches enlightenment, no action is desired or required. Living in such a state is living in peace. No fighting. No causes. No belief systems. Getting to enlightenment means letting go of causes, opinions, and wanting to control others. Through letting everything be, as it is, without wanting to change it, one finds peace.
Sarah is on the right track by showing that worrying about problems all over the world is generating discomfort; and that it would be more beneficial to be concerned about what is local. Letting go of worrying about events around the world gives some relief. Not watching national and international news for a while brings calmness. Those are examples of letting go of wanting control. It is seemingly difficult to let go of worrying about things. Worrying is fear. Fear happens when one wants control and believes that one can't control something.
Every fear, worry, and concern you have, is because you are wanting control. If you could release every point where you want control, you would feel the deepest peace you've ever felt. That is the road to enlightenment. The ultimate spiritual freedom.

How did one so young get so wise? Beautifully stated and filled with TRUTH. God Bless You, Sarah.

Ms. Cain is wise beyond her years, articulate too.
I decide a few years ago that my faith based offerings will only go to local organizations, not national ones.
Start with knowing your neighbors. Just knock on the door and introduce yourselves.

Tragic. Is this in the US? I was thinking NYC but since you own a gun it must not be.
