The journalist had attended a social gathering where she encountered Ted Heath, just after he had left office for the last time. At some point she asked him to tell her his greatest fear for the future. The journalist expected some fluff answer like "nuclear holocaust" or "world hunger." Ted Heath, without hesitation, looked her in the eyes and flatly said, "That Britain will become the first democratically elected police state."
The story may be apocryphal. That would not, unfortunately, make it any less true.
