The man who expressed he was indignant “on behalf of women” because of what is probably another excellent work by Anthony Esolen defending Western civilization from collapse, seems to have been exercising the male instinct to defend the damsel in distress -- albeit misplaced and wholly imaginary or delusional in this case. Our enemies have engaged in this kind of psychological manipulation for a long time now where we see men (like this fellow) being duped into alienating themselves from their very identity - to the detriment of both sexes. Somehow forgetting that the civilization provided is extremely comfortable for women. Someone ought to tell these fellows that the overwhelming majority of women including large swaths of the feminist spectrum prefer strong, confident, self-sufficient men who have perfected their game - not placating doters, but providers and protectors.
No doubt Esolen has documented and explained what a fine, special, and unique civilization the work and contributions of countless virtuous, strong, self-sacrificing men have bequeathed upon us all - women and men. The temptation is to take it for granted, not realizing its comparative value, and as you say Sarah, pretending this fact somehow takes away from the countless, virtuous contributions of women to our civilization - in other words being conned out of our own unique and good heritage. Literally the heritage of our fathers.
Manipulative, mass, psychological warfare indeed cause these non sequiturs to gain currency. A little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough. The prescription is to wake up, be smart, and call it what it is; Virtue by association, indignation-by-proxy are good descriptives for the phenomenon described. Faulty virtue signaling comes to mind. Use false notions like this one as an exercise in logic, pointing out and even laughing at their irrationality and yes even explaining their catastrophic end result - to the point where thinking people know better than to buy into them. We essentially need to brand them, totally uncool.
