I live in Florida, USA. Guns here are plentiful, as in Texas and a few other states. There isn't much lawlessness in our state toward fellow citizens, as there is in places where guns are forbidden, like New York, and Washington, DC... all places where the elected officials are Democrats. This country was founded as a constitutional republic, but people seem to think that voting for Democrats will increase democracy. It isn't so.

Fellow Englisher here. I'm really starting to get the American love of guns. We can't trust (or expect) the police to protect us, yet we're not permitted to protect ourselves. When somebody does act in self defence, they often end up facing prosecution e.g. the elderly man who killed a robber with a knife while protecting his wife. He was arrested on suspicion of murder, but ultimately it was ruled lawful.

He and his wife had to change their identities as the robber was a Traveller and his thug family and friends kept placing shrines by their house (police ok'd this) and threatening them for killing their orecioys scumbag. Again, it's a community that gets kid glove treatment in my experience.

A well known truth in America: "When seconds count the police are minutes away." AND something few Americans know, courts have ruled that police officers have NO legal requirement to protect citizens! I am armed & ready to defend myself at ALL times. That includes in churches & hospitals. There is NO safe place.

I hope, that unlike most of those I know who carry a firearm, you are properly trained in defensive shooting.

It is a discipline requiring a great deal of effort to “master”—something my acquaintances and neighbors here in rural north Georgia seem to think is merely the same “skillset” their grandaddies taught them when squirrel hunting.

Yes, I am formally trained. But you can find reports of people who aren't who dispatched an attacker. That even includes some children who had never fired a gun.

And your point is?

Maybe you don't belong in Georgia

Watch out, "The devil went down to Georgia." ;-)

God bless Charlie Daniels.

I had the pleasure of driving around the Atlanta area several years ago while I was TDY at Anniston army depot in The Great state of Alabama

While driving around Atlanta kept seeing billboards for a local gun show, so I checked it out. I had already spent most of my perdium at the CMP south store in Anniston. But was able to visit with other firearm enthusiasts at the show. (Also known as " fellow gun nuts" lol)

California is following the UK model, not entirely there yet, but soon.

It's become Commiefornia. It was a great state & could be again but apparently the voters want less freedom. I don't know how the great thinker & lecturer Victor Davis Hanson can stay there.

Brava, my Dear Sarah! Once again, right to the heart of the issue.

As a firearms instructor for over 50 years, I can confidently say the problem of inadequately trained gun owners is nationwide. The male ego is the root of this deficit as my women students are almost universally great students.😀

An excellent essay. The broader context of course is the now-prevailing efforts by most “western” nations to extend the citizenry’s dependence on government for virtually everything in their lives, including their physical safety and, increasingly their very lives.

As the scaredemic made crystal clear, this dependence requires surrender of one’s rights (both “natural” and those given by government) and thus extends the increasingly totalitarian control over the government’s subjects, since they are steadily losing their status as citizens.
