My wife had an abortion when she was a teenager before I met her. She doesn't talk about it too much, but when she does it's the biggest regret of her life and talks about how traumatizing it was. She was talked into it by other family members telling her she's too young to have a baby and it'll ruin your life. It turns out the abortion is still ruining her life. Every so often we'll talk about it and she still remembers it like it was yesterday and it was like 40 years ago. It's a burden she'll bear for the rest of her life and we wouldn't wish it on anyone. You're awake when they do this and watch them dispose of this life that was inside of you. Terrible.

while my wife was pregnant with our third child, a daughter, she kept losing weight, couldn't keep food down, was hospitalized 3 times for a total of 2 months and ended up having a PIC line inserted to provide her with nutrition. her ob/gyn advised us to get a "therapeutic abortion", to which i told him those two words do not even belong in the same sentence. our daughter was born w/o complications, gave us a supersmart grandson, lost a second baby to miscarriage and now is pregnant with another baby. ABORTIONS ARE JUST MORALLY WRONG. remember what Christ said.

Thank you for you presentation, Sarah. Dr. Francis Schaeffer warned us of the dangerous direction culture was taking over 40 years ago. The pro-life argument, as Dr. Peter Kreeft presents it, is a syllogism. Premise 1: The unnecessary taking of innocent human life is always morally wrong; Premise 2: Elective abortion takes an innocent human life unnecessarily; Consequently, elective abortion is morally wrong. To refute this, one must argue that the fetus is not human. This was popular a number of years ago, but not today. We know better. So abortion advocates now seek to justify taking human life on the basis of certain qualifications--the fetus lacks person hood, the fetus will have a poor quality of life, the fetus is not innocent but impinges on the mother's life physically or economically, etc. In other words, the abortion movement seeks to undermine--directly or indirectly--the innocence of the fetus by suggesting that has a characteristic or relationship that in some way makes it "guilty" in some sense. They have actually turned to justifying the unnecessary sacrifice of innocent human life--even to the point of infanticide--on the basis of certain qualifications or relationships that may be imposed upon the fetus. It this is allowed, then such qualifications, as Dr. Schaeffer predicted, will eventually be imposed upon adults and even children. The infirm elderly are particularly at risk. So I urge you to hold the line. In the not distant past, we have seen how brutal assumptions easily lead to brutal society.

Thank you for the statistics and perspective featured in this post. I do volunteer work in a recovery program. I've heard similar regrets from women who have had abortions. Often led to other destructive behaviors.

Orson Scott Card's new youth novel Duplex treats the subject thoughtfully. The protagonist's mother aborts a difficult late in life pregnancy and the collateral damage shatters his family.

Thank you, but I do wish you had touched on the issue of partner coercion more. Also, I wish pro life activists would be taught not to adopt a hostile attitude nor reduce themselves to throwing around accusations of murder. Women who have aborted (and some are still girls at the time of encounters with pro life people) are victims and need encouragement and compassion. Only then are they able to hear the truth.

Great article as always. Makes me wonder how many healthy babies have been killed because the parents were told by doctors they had a severe deformity. Even if the baby does have a deformity it doesn't justify killing the baby in the womb.

They also have a higher rate for miscarriages after a abortion.
