We just returned from the Van Gogh museum this week. His landscapes didn't make me think about nationalism, didn't make me feel conflicted about not being Dutch, and didn't even make me think about his struggles with mental illness. Instead, I could feel the emotion he was trying to convey, the motion in the grass, the beauty in the ordinary. It appears the Fitzwilliam Museum would say I was missing the entire point of his work! Sad.
